Abstract

The international system of trademark protection has almost a 100 years of tradition. Its main element is the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property of 1883. The author addresses, among other issues, such as the development of the concept of the trademark and its legal protection before the establishment of the international system of protection, the provisions of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the Madrid Agreements concerning the international registration of trademarks, the Nice Agreement concerning the international classification of goods and services for the purposes of registering trademarks. The increasing number of protected trade marks and service marks in the world necessitates the search for modern organisational and procedural solutions to enable new trade marks and service marks to smoothly enter the international market. It is also becoming imperative to speed up the process of international unification of the law in this area.
