Abstract

The adoption by the UN General Assembly in November 1989 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child caused general satisfaction. However, the impact and eloquence of this document was undermined by the imprecision of its wording on the one hand, and by the objections raised to it on the other. Both of these factors simultaneously contributed to the widespread adoption of the act. The possibility to raise objections has been used by one third of the states-parties to the Convention. Unfortunately, only some of these statements seek to modify the provisions of the document discussed in favour of children. Most of them undermine its effect, often in clear contradiction to the objectives of the Convention. The fact that only 12 countries have raised objections to certain positions may be indicative of the passivity and lack of interest in the legal situation of children worldwide on the part of the remaining countries.
