Abstract
The study touches upon the reasons for which a person becomes a criminal from the point of view of criminological studies by Batawia, Pawełczyńska, and Kępiński. It is based on an analysis of their most important research on the Holocaust in Poland, regarding the situation in the concentration camp in Auschwitz. Danuta Raś discusses the research questions and dilemmas of criminologists dealing with the source of crime and cruelty. The article tries to introduce the reader to the researchers’ conclusions. Among the most important observations on the behaviour that pushes people to perform acts of violence and cruelty, one could mention the influence of upbringing and living in a conducive parental and ideological atmosphere, as well as the will to totally submit to orders and to place one’s own fate in the hands of others. Raś assumes that, apart from the issue of biology, a factor that pushes people towards crime may be the influence of the family and community, though committing criminal acts is mainly influenced by the will of the perpetrator. The article leaves the reader with the suggestion that despite the passage of many years since the atrocities of the Second World War, criminologists and researchers are still asking themselves questions about the causes of evil and crime.
